Ai tempi del Ginnasio a Ferrara presi a frequentare una Sala Corse del tutto legale nella quale si potevano scommettere anche 200 lire (mi par di ricordare) su vincenti o piazzati. Io mi intendevo di trotto e solo sul trotto scommettevo i miei pochi denari. A volte scommettevo anticipatamente su vari ippodromi del trotto come San Siro o l’Arcoveggio di Bologna e poi me ne andavo a lezione. Per tornare nel tardo pomeriggio a vedere cosa avevo vinto. Mi capitò anni dopo di seguire da inviato i luttuosi fatti di Bologna e quando non c’era servizio me ne andavo all’Arcoveggio a vedere e a giocare moderatamente i miei amati trottatori. Un pomeriggio che facevo qualche lira mi avvicinò un simpatico contadino vestito da festa chiedendomi se potevamo giocare in società. Mi spiegò che avrebbe tanto voluto nel podere una fattrice per allevare un puledrino da corsa, ma che i figli si erano opposti temendo di caricarsi troppe spese. In quel caso ebbi fortuna e alla ultima corsa vincemmo una sommetta e il mio occasionale compagno, felice, mi volle a tutti i costi offrire da bere. Tornai in albergo piuttosto alticcio e chiesi del pane per smaltire la sbronza.
