(askanews) - Sarà il lanciatore italiano Vega-C a mettere in orbita la missione spaziale Smile (Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) nata dalla collaborazione tra l'Agenzia spaziale europea (ESA) e l'Accademia Cinese delle Scienze (CAS). Obiettivo: comprendere meglio l'interazione tra il Sole e la Terra.Il lancio, dallo spazioporto europeo di Kourou, in Guyana francese, attualmente è previsto per la fine del 2025."L'accordo - ha dichiarato Stéphane Israel, amministratore delegato di Arianespace - segna oltre quattro anni di collaborazione tra Arianespace ed ESA per sviluppare la missione SMILE a bordo di Vega C". Vega-C posizionerà Smile in un'orbita terrestre bassa, dalla quale il veicolo spaziale si spingerà fino a circa 121.000 km dalla superficie terrestre per una osservazione prolungata delle regioni polari settentrionali, prima di avvicinarsi a meno di 5000 km per trasmettere il suo tesoro di dati raccolti alle stazioni di terra in Antartide e in Cina.Smile otterrà le prime immagini e i primi video a raggi X del vento solare che incontra la bolla magnetica che protegge la Terra. Le immagini ultraviolette complementari forniranno la più lunga osservazione continua dell'aurora boreale.
