Per motivi ancora da accertare l’uomo, un 40enne, è caduto nel fiume infestato dai coccodrilli, trascinando con sè anche la moglie, che si è però salvata grazie all’estremo ed eroico gesto del marito. Dave Hogbin, originario di Newcastle, stava trascorrendo una tranquilla giornata di vacanza con sua moglie Jane Carey nei pressi del fiume Annan, vicino a Cooktown. Secondo le ricostruzioni, mentre la coppia camminava lungo il fiume, Dave è scivolato e caduto in acqua, seguito dalla moglie. Un coccodrillo di cinque metri lo ha afferrato immediatamente. Jane ha raccontato alla stampa locale che il marito, pur di salvarla, ha lasciato andare il suo braccio per evitare di trascinarla con sé nella morsa del rettile. "Ci stavamo godendo una normale giornata di vacanza e tutto è cambiato in 30 secondi. Mi ha salvato, il suo ultimo gesto è stato quello di non trascinarmi con sé", ha dichiarato la donna, ancora sotto shock per l'accaduto. L'incidente si è verificato la scorsa settimana e, dopo giorni di ricerche, gli ufficiali della fauna selvatica hanno rinvenuto resti umani all'interno di un coccodrillo identificato grazie a una cicatrice bianca sul muso. Daniel Guymer, del Dipartimento per l'Ambiente, la Scienza e l'Innovazione, ha confermato il ritrovamento, spiegando che l'animale è stato abbattuto.La polizia del Queensland ha confermato che è in corso un processo di identificazione formale e che verrà redatto un rapporto per il medico legale, sebbene non sembrino esserci dubbi sull'identità della vittima. "Gli ufficiali della fauna selvatica hanno praticato l'eutanasia su un grande coccodrillo che si ritiene sia responsabile dell'attacco mortale sul fiume Annan", ha dichiarato il Dipartimento.Fortunatamente, i tre figli della coppia non erano presenti al momento del dramma. "Sono contenta di essere ancora qui, perché avrebbe potuto essere un milione di volte peggio per tutti i soggetti coinvolti, non solo per i ragazzi", ha affermato Jane. Ha descritto il marito come "la persona più calma e rassicurante da avere in una crisi, ed era così amorevole, premuroso, ferocemente leale e protettivo, e intelligente". In parallelo, le autorità stanno indagando su alcuni video emersi sui social media che mostrano un gruppo di persone dare da mangiare a un coccodrillo nello stesso fiume Annan. Guymer ha definito il comportamento "rischioso e sconsiderato", oltre che un reato. L'episodio ha sollevato nuovamente la questione della sicurezza nelle zone abitate dai coccodrilli e dell'importanza di comportamenti responsabili per evitare tragedie simili.
